“Educational Expedition on the Shtegu i Gështenjave”

Together with a group of young people, we organized an educational expedition along the Shtegu i Gështenjave, one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the area.

The trail, which passes through natural chestnut forests (Castanea sativa), became a vibrant space for learning and reflection on biodiversity and the values of the nature that surrounds us.

The expedition was led by Discover Pogradec, guiding the participants in identifying and interpreting the characteristic species of the region. During the walk, several typical representatives of the local flora and fauna were observed, including the Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni), a Mediterranean land species with an important role in the ecosystem, as well as the nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes), one of the region’s most characteristic reptiles, recognizable by the small horn on the front of its head. Among the plant species identified in bloom were the common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), known for its nutritional and medicinal values, and the common juniper (Juniperus communis), a typical species of dry and hilly habitats.

Part of the experience also included stops at natural and cultural landmarks such as the Church of Shën e Diela and the Kabash Waterfall, making this expedition a beautiful blend of nature and local heritage.

These activities are carried out within the framework of the project “Life Around Water,” part of the Green-AL Programme “Support for Civil Society Organizations 2024–2027,” funded by the Swedish Government through Sida and implemented by Co-PLAN in cooperation with VIS Albania and COSV – Cooperazione per lo Sviluppo.
